In the midst of LA's most prolific period since the Golden Age of Hollywood, psychogoth goddess Tamara Sky's been hard at work defining the sounds of the New Aeon. When we last left off, she had given us Lil Death Live, fifty-two minutes of flesh-tickling techno & industrial.

Now, she's back with "Therapy," her first official original release, with five genre-blending remixes.

At bat, we've got an 8-bit Black Metal bloodletter by technoshaman H3x3n, Deep Sea Punk soulfulness from Ultrademon (lovingly described as "a unicorn K-hole in a levitating jacuzzi"), breakthrough Boston electro duo Glass Teeth's wicked erotic asphyxiatune, an industro-minimal future-dancefloor destroyer from low end darlings Triple Six Sound Club, and, lovingly taking up the anchor, some self-described "leftfield apocalyptic post-garage Mutantronica" from soon-to-be Lil Death superstar, Textbeak. Whew!

The title track itself is an orgy of downtempo dub techno beats and über-sexified vocals, and if this is any indication, by the time her full EP is out, we'll be more than well acquainted with the future sounds of techno.

Follow @TamaraSky & @L1LDEATH to stay abreast of the Singularity. 'Til then, turn on, tune in, & drop dead.

WASTELAND: We recently got to hang with our resident zombie/vampire/robot/babe (you’ll get the reference in a second) and do a little time traveling to the 90s. A place where “Clarissa Explains It All” and TLC ruled. Besides playing dress up for our latest vintage upload, we sat down to probe her a bit! Here’s what she had to say about being “Tamara Sky” and her thoughts on our post-apocalyptic future.

How did you start DJ-ing?

After living in Miami for about a year, I had a few DJ friends that inspired me to learn. Making it a career out of it never crossed my mind, but once I started learning it became very addicting.
Is it true you were discovered on MySpace? Tell us about that!

Who told you that?! (haha)

Yes, it’s true! I had done a couple of Miami gigs and soon after I got offers to do traveling gigs through MySpace.
You grew up in Puerto Rico.

How has the culture and music there influenced your style today?

At some point it influenced me a lot. As time passes I feel like my ear evolves further away from this. I still love Salsa music. One influence I took form my island and will always stay with me is the African-Voodoo vibes.

Tell us a little bit about where you look to for style as well as musical inspiration?

The internet is an inspiration vortex. I mostly get inspired by underground fashion and music from retro horror films.

What are some of your favorite artists right now?

Steve Moore, Gesaffelstein, TRUST, Jimmy Edgar, Grimes, Fatima Al Qadiri & Antoni Maiovvi.

You just recently moved out to LA. Tell us about the transition from east to west coast.

L.A is an amazing city! I always knew I would move here someday. I love Miami but sometimes I felt there was no space for creative growth. Los Angeles is the complete opposite of this… inspiration is everywhere.

Any exciting projects in the works you’d like to share with us?

Soon after I moved to L.A me and my BFF’s Caleb Gauge(<3) & Alexis Mincolla started a weekly showcase event called Lil Death. We are about to celebrate our one year anniversary during Halloween! Whats even more exciting is that we are transitioning Lil Death into a Record Label. There’s a lot more coming…

You recently DJ-ed our “Wasted Daze” event, and gave us a little taste of your favorite 90s vibes. Today, you model them. What era do you relate to most when it comes to your personal style and why?

If I could live in an era it would be the 18th century. I adore those Victorian Goth gowns from Bram Stroker’s Dracula. I also like the Mad Max post- apocalyptic style… but that era hasn’t happened… yet (*wink).

How has 2012 been for you so far? Any major goals for 2013?

2012 has been an evolving year for me. Working on some original tunes! Trying to get some out before the world ends!

What’s your dream gig? Where would it be ideally, and who would you be playing with?

I would love to DJ at a rave in the base of the Mayan Temple with who ever is my current favorite DJ… at the end of the world.

What’s the best thing you’ve ever gotten at Wasteland?

A vintage Slayer T-Shirt with the Live Undead album cover.

by SUSIE on Jul 6, 2012

Tamara Sky is unlike most DJs (and lady ones at that!). Our July Chick of the Month is living the American dream while transcending the role of “master track selector” and dominating all facets of music culture. She is as hot as “multi-hyphenates” get, with LA and Miami based parties (LIL DEATH and Overthrow) on her resume as well as modeling gigs, tantalizing mixtape skills, and most recently, blogging for the premiere EDM blog, Gotta Dance Dirty. We caught up with Tamara to discuss her work, her bangs, and the convergence of music and art.

Tell us about Overthrow and LIL DEATH!

Overthrow is a creative collective, we started a few years back in Miami with a group of very close friends. At first we were doing parties for our own entertainment. Started off with a murder party called Black Sunday that quickly became the best thing that happened to Miami’s nightlife. It is now legendary.

What kind of music do you play at LIL DEATH? What makes it one of LA’s best parties?

Most of our projects are based around music, such as LIL DEATH. We launched the LIL DEATH party last October shortly after moving to LA. There are several layers to the party’s aesthetic… essentially based around the french phrase “La Petite Mort” and the dark connection between sex and death. The music ranges in genre a lot but still maintains a particular dark motif…anywhere from dark techno and acid house to cold wave, industrial, witch house, and trap. I think the party is doing well because it paints a clear picture from the mixtapes, photobooths, etc.

You’ve had a strong presence in MIA… What brought you there and what made you leave for LA?

Being a tropical girl, I love Miami and miss it at times. But as a DJ, I felt there was a glass ceiling. For example I could never pull off LIL DEATH in Miami…there just aren’t enough influencers who have that sort of musical palette. I know I’m sort of a small fish in LA, but I feel this is the US mecca for electronic music right now.

How has your mixtape game helped your career? What is necessary to distinguish a mixtape from all the rest that are all over the internet?

My mixtape game is pretty strong I must say It’s been the biggest factor in debunking the assumption that I’m not just a knob turning pretty face. I believe that mixtapes that stand out tell a story. At least this is how I make mine, with levels of meaning and intention in all of them. They all come with a vibe, theme, tittle and cover that I personally design to convey their respective messages. I use movie samples and rare music gems finds to make them unique. Unfortunately, nowadays a lot of mixes are created with a disposable mentality… Rather, I put my soul into making memorable ones.

Are you amped to be the first female contributor on Gotta Dance Dirty? What does that signify for female talent in your industry?

I’m super honored to work with the GDD family, especially considering English is my second language. Their blog is a powerhouse for EDM culture. I’m looking forward to having this platform to shed light on verging music. Not sure what this signifies for other females in my industry, but I definitely give myself a pat in the back for this one.

Have you ever brought your DJing home to Puerto Rico? If so, how does the audience there react compared to the mainland US?

Overthrow produced a big one-off in San Juan a few years ago. The party was amazing, but their knowledge of new music is very limited. Their mental outlook on music, fashion and art can sometimes be very xenophobic and conventional.

Have you always rocked your signature bangs?

I’ve had them on and off since I was little. Got them back in my early 20′s … I’ll probably still rock them with grey hair and wisdom wrinkles.

How do you unwind when you are not working?

I don’t really have a 9-5er so I’m pretty much always doing something music related or creative. I have become quite the film junkie lately.

What are your thoughts on taking your music in a more commercial direction? Do you want to keep it underground?

I file this question under skewed perception. It’s funny because I play at VIP, commercial, underground, indie, ghetto & EBM/EDM parties… but people always want to put DJs in a box. My whole career has been smoke & mirrors. Some DJs are purists, but I like to do it all. Why not? I have the library & knowledge to do it. The music I push has always been more indie, it inspires me. I know whats going on in music and love to be the bridge between the commercial & cool. I have no reservations about commercializing our “selling out” as long as I can be creative on my own terms. Packaging the mixtapes I do under my brand with my stamp of approval IS a cycle of commercialization. I consider myself something more like Karmaloop… we take cool shit and distribute it like media.

Where do you think music and art are headed in the next 10 years? How will they interact?

I think music and visual art have always been interconnected on a creative level, but the industries are growing further apart. The value of art is easier to quantify and thrives on the upper class. Music on the other hand depends on the lowest common denominator to sell itself.

The DJ: Tamara Sky
Though she’d be the first to tell you she spends too much of her time on the road, we were thrilled to find that Tamara Sky, a Puerto Rico-born sensation on the ones and twos, officially calls Los Angeles home. Tamara’s story reads like mythic fiction — a beauty-contest title led to modeling, which led to deejay gigs, which led to television and movie appearances. But none of this came from fairy dust — Ms. Sky has earned her stripes every step of the way with ambition, drive, and pure dedication to her career.

Perhaps what’s most impressive about this spinner is her seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of music, including everything from the salsa and reggaeton of her home country to disco, electro, house, and dancehall. This multi-talented young woman is about as unstoppable as the beats coming from one of her mixtapes, but you can try to catch her if you’re quick at one of her upcoming gigs. Let the rhythm move you!

For the past 6 months, The Overthrow Collective and I have been performing this sort of experimental party in Downtown LA called Lil Death. The project is essentially a weekly event centered around a very specific tech-noir sound that we like to call “Gotham Wave.” To tantalize your curiosity, I’ve just released version 2.0 of our Lil Death mix series with influences of post-punk, industrial, french techno, and witch house.

You may have heard about Gotta Dance Dirty’s newest addition Tamara Sky numerous times here on the site already. We’re excited to announce that she is now on board as our first female contributor to GDD™ and we think her impeccable and eclectic tastes will only add to your experience here as a valued and loyal reader.

In addition to being an all-around bad ass chick and superstar DJ extraordinaire, Tamara is an artist, model, horror movie enthusiast, and generally a multi-tasking phenomenon. She recently moved from Miami to LA, and is helping expand our brethren collective The Overthrow with their already notorious weekly party project Lil Death, which takes place in DWNTWN LA, and may or may not feature regular human sacrifices.

Alas, my enduring obsession with all things Steve Moore continues, including his many aliases Gianni Rossi, Lovelock & Zombi. When I first heard his music a couple of years ago, I couldn't find a trace of him online, swearing ownership to some presumed relic from my parent's generation. To date I still haven't figured out if he's from the past or the future, nonetheless Steve Moore's cinematic sound is arguably the driving inspiration to a few of my favorite producers.

Brainstorm, released by Temporary Residence, is a split LP between Steve Moore and Majeure, both founding members of the sci-fi, progressive synth rock duo Zombi. If you're looking for a cerebral, tense, dark, dreamy, atmospheric and apocalyptic odyssey to maintain your insanity... then this is what you need to listen to .

Little is known about him other than he was killed in a car accident in 1986 with his beloved Ferrari Testarossa, and in 2006 came back from the dead in Zombie form with his 12-inch 'Teddy Boy'. His production style reminds me of those synth heavy, dark, full & cinematic awesome Horror film soundtracks of the 1980s. He has also been compared to other great French artists including Daft Punk and Danger.

Below the teaser of Kavinsky's his new album.

If you speak spanish you've probably heard about this band, but if you haven't I'm always stoked to introduce people to new music. In this case I'm talking about the indie/electronic band Disco Ruido from Mexico. Outside their hometown of Mexico City, they've received some international recognition: being nominated for Best Mexican Artist in the Independent Music Awards of Spain. In Mexico they've performed with indie american bands like TV On The Radio (love them) & The Drums.

Their single Morfeo from the album Sistema Solar is my favorite. The music video was filmed at an abandoned art deco cinema in Mexico City. The track sounds witchy, and there are plenty of mythological references in the video to think this is a song about Morpheous, the Greek god of dreams. Check it out below.

Free download the Morfeo EP here.
